Biography

Léo Canhoto & Robertinho were a groundbreaking Brazilian sertanejo duo formed in Goiânia in 1969. Leonildo Sachi, known as Léo Canhoto, was born in Anhumas, São Paulo, in 1936, and José Simão Alves, Robertinho, was born in Água Limpa, Goiás, in 1944. The duo is credited with revolutionizing the sertanejo music scene by incorporating elements of rock, country, and even spaghetti western soundtracks into their music. They were pioneers in using electric guitars, organs, and drums in sertanejo arrangements, a stark contrast to the traditional viola and acoustic guitar sound.

Their innovative approach, which included a more modern visual style with long hair and sunglasses, initially faced criticism and discrimination from the traditional sertanejo community and radio stations. However, their unique sound and theatrical performances, often inspired by cowboy and western films with sound effects and dialogues, resonated with a wider audience. Their hit song "Apartamento 37" earned them a Golden Record, making them the first sertanejo duo to achieve this milestone in Brazil. During the 1970s, they became the most popular sertanejo duo in the country, breaking sales and box office records.

Despite the challenges, Léo Canhoto & Robertinho paved the way for future generations of sertanejo artists, influencing popular duos like Chitãozinho & Xororó and Zezé Di Camargo & Luciano. Léo Canhoto passed away in São Paulo on July 25, 2020, at the age of 84. The duo's legacy as innovators who expanded the boundaries of Brazilian sertanejo music continues to be celebrated.
