Biography

Leopoldo Constantino Fróes da Cruz was born in Niterói on September 30, 1882. Although his parents opposed his desire to act, he initially graduated in law and took a diplomatic position in Paris, but soon redirected his trajectory to the stage and began his artistic career in Portugal.

Back in Brazil in 1915, he joined theater companies, achieving great notoriety in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo between the 1910s and 1920s. In addition to his work as an actor, singer, and composer, Fróes stood out for valuing Brazilian diction in theater and founded, alongside friends and journalists like Irineu Marinho, the important charity institution Retiro dos Artistas.

His contribution to national culture also extended to silent and sound cinema, participating in productions such as Perdida and Minha Noite de Núpcias. Leopoldo Fróes passed away on March 2, 1932, in Davos, Switzerland, a victim of tuberculosis contracted during filming, leaving a lasting legacy in the country's performing arts, alongside fundamental names in our culture such as João Caetano.
