Biography
Linda Batista, born Florinda Grandino de Oliveira in São Paulo, was one of the most prominent figures in the golden age of Brazilian radio. She began her musical journey accompanying her younger sister, Dircinha Batista, on the acoustic guitar during early performances. Her big break came in 1936 when she stepped in for her sister on Francisco Alves's radio program, quickly capturing the public's affection and cementing her status as a star.
In 1937, Linda achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first singer elected Queen of the Radio, a prestigious title she held for eleven consecutive years. As a major attraction for Rádio Nacional, she embarked on wildly successful tours across Northern and Northeastern Brazil, performing notable pieces by composers such as Capiba. Her voice defined an era of Brazilian popular music, marked by memorable recordings of sambas, marches, and collaborations with legendary artists like Nelson Gonçalves.
Beyond her prolific radio and recording career, she starred in numerous classic Brazilian films throughout the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, contributing to the vibrant cinematic culture of the time. Linda Batista passed away in Rio de Janeiro in 1988, leaving behind a rich legacy as a pioneering songstress and cultural icon of Brazilian music.
