Biography
Linda Rodrigues, born Sofia Gervazone in Rio de Janeiro on August 11, 1919, was a prominent Brazilian singer and composer, particularly known for her contributions to the samba-canção genre. Her career began in the early 1940s, initially as an interpreter of sambas and carnival marches. She gained national recognition in the 1950s with her emotive performances in the samba-canção style, a genre characterized by its themes of romantic disappointment and heartbreak, earning her the moniker "the queen of "dor-de-cotovelo" (elbow pain).
Rodrigues's discography includes recordings for various labels such as Continental, Star, RCA Victor, Todamérica, Sinter, Carnaval, and Chantecler. Her most significant hit was the 1952 samba-canção "Lama" (Squalor), which became one of her signature songs. She also composed numerous songs, often in partnership with other notable Brazilian musicians like Aldacir Louro and Ailce Chaves. Her 1961 album, "Companheiras da Noite," is considered a highlight of her compositional work.
Beyond her musical career, Linda Rodrigues also had a complex personal life that sometimes drew public attention. She was known for her strong personality and was also recognized within certain circles for being a lesbian, a fact that was not widely publicized during her active career. Rodrigues passed away in Rio de Janeiro on November 16, 1997.
