Biography

Lindembergue Rocha Cardoso was a prominent Brazilian composer, conductor, and professor born in Livramento de Nossa Senhora, Bahia. He graduated in Composition and Conducting from the School of Music of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) in 1974, studying under Ernst Widmer, and later became a dedicated educator at the same institution, teaching various subjects ranging from folklore to musical structure and orchestration. His academic and artistic career was deeply intertwined with important Brazilian cultural institutions, including his role as a founding member of the Grupo de Compositores da Bahia in 1966 and the Brazilian Society of Contemporary Music. In 1988, he was inducted into the Brazilian Academy of Music.

Cardoso left behind a vast and diverse catalog that spanned concert music, popular genres, religious works, opera, and incidental music for theater, dance, and cinema, reaching opus 110 alongside numerous unclassified arrangements and compositions. Throughout his lifetime, his innovative works received multiple prestigious awards across Brazil, establishing him as a vital figure in contemporary Brazilian classical music. His contributions greatly enriched the cultural landscape of Bahia and the nation, working alongside contemporaries such as Tom Zé and Jamary Oliveira.
