Biography

Liu & Léu was a highly influential Brazilian sertanejo duo formed by brothers Lincoln Paulino da Costa (Liu) and Walter Paulino da Costa (Léu). Born in Itajobi, São Paulo, the brothers came from a family with a strong musical tradition, which also included other successful duos like their siblings Zico & Zeca and cousins Vieira & Vieirinha.

Their musical journey began in their youth, working in coffee and cereal plantations and participating in local festivities with traditional music and dance. Walter, even as a teenager, performed on radio shows, and Lincoln was known for his poetic recitations and humorous performances. The duo's professional career officially launched in 1957 after an impromptu performance at Rádio Bandeirantes in São Paulo, where they impressed producers with their rendition of "Meu Ranchinho." This led to their debut on the program "Novidades Sertanejas" and the subsequent adoption of their stage names, Liu & Léu.

Throughout their career, Liu & Léu became renowned for preserving the traditional style of "moda de viola" and were considered key figures in the "sertanejo raiz" movement. They released numerous LPs and CDs, achieving success with hits like "Boiadeiro Errante," "Rei do Café," "Jeitão de Caboclo," and "Meu Ranchinho." Their music often depicted rural life, emotions, and the culture of the Brazilian countryside. Liu passed away in 2012, and Léu continued to perform with their brother Zeca until his own passing in 2019. Their legacy endures as a symbol of authentic sertanejo music.
