Biography
Formed in 1989, Loustal was a pivotal Brazilian band that served as the primary precursor to the influential Manguebeat movement. The group consisted of Chico Science on vocals, Lúcio Maia on guitar, Alexandre Dengue on bass, and Vinicius Sette. The band's name was a tribute to the French comic book artist Jacques de Loustal, reflecting the group's interest in diverse artistic mediums.\n\nMusically, Loustal's sound was rooted in 1960s rock, which they innovatively blended with elements of soul, funk, and hip hop. This experimental fusion created the foundation for what would later become a revolution in the Brazilian music scene. Many tracks that later gained national fame with Chico Science & Nação Zumbi, such as "Etnia" and "Manguetown," originated during this period and can still be found as early demos.\n\nIn 1991, the trajectory of the band changed forever when they joined forces with the samba-reggae group Lamento Negro. This union led to the formation of Chico Science & Nação Zumbi, effectively ending Loustal’s run as a standalone project but cementing its legacy as the laboratory where the Manguebeat aesthetic was first developed.
