He rose to prominence as a founding member of the influential band Nação Zumbi, a pioneering group alongside Mundo Livre S/A that birthed the vibrant Manguebeat movement in the 1990s. Throughout his career, Maia has been celebrated for his innovative guitar work, earning recognition as one of the country's finest guitarists and collaborating with iconic artists such as Chico Science and Jorge du Peixe.
In addition to his foundational work with Nação Zumbi, Maia has pursued diverse artistic ventures, including his solo project Maquinado, through which he released albums like "Homem Binário" and "Mundialmente Anônimo: O Magnético Sangramento da Existência". His musical versatility led him to form the band Almaz alongside Seu Jorge and Antônio Pinto, resulting in a self-titled collaborative album in 2010. Furthermore, he has lent his guitar talents to other esteemed Brazilian acts, performing on Marisa Monte's album and tour "Verdade Uma Ilusão".
Maia officially parted ways with Nação Zumbi in 2020, shifting his creative focus toward solo music, theater, and cinema.
