Within the group, Oliveira played the bandola and reco-reco, contributing to their rich repertoire of choros, maxixes, and other traditional Brazilian genres.
Oito Batutas achieved significant recognition, performing at venues like the Cine Palais and later embarking on an international tour to Paris in 1922, where they played at the Schéhérazade nightclub for six months. The ensemble's performances were admired by notable figures such as Rui Barbosa and Ernesto Nazareth. After their return to Brazil, the group also toured Buenos Aires, Argentina, where they made recordings for RCA Victor.

The Oito Batutas are considered a foundational element of MPB, and Oliveira's role as an instrumentalist within the ensemble was integral to their sound and success.
