Biography

Luís Fernando Veríssimo was a celebrated Brazilian writer, humorist, and occasional musician who left an indelible mark on the country's cultural landscape. Born in Porto Alegre, he spent parts of his childhood and adolescence in the United States due to his father's academic and diplomatic posts, an experience that ignited his lifelong passion for jazz and the saxophone. Returning to Brazil in the 1950s, Veríssimo established himself across multiple creative mediums, writing bestselling satirical columns, cartoon series like As Cobras, and performing with musical projects such as Renato e seu Sexteto and the jazz ensemble Jazz 6.

Throughout his prolific career, Veríssimo published over eighty titles, earning widespread national renown for his acute wit, memorable literary characters like Ed Mort and O Analista de Bagé, and deep engagement with Brazilian arts. He collaborated musically with renowned acts such as Kleiton & Kledir, blending his literary acumen with instrumental prowess on the saxophone. His enduring contributions to literature and music cemented his status as one of Brazil's most beloved contemporary cultural figures.

Veríssimo passed away in August 2025 at the age of eighty-eight in his hometown of Porto Alegre, leaving behind a monumental legacy of satire, fiction, and musical expression. His works continue to be celebrated through numerous theatrical adaptations, television specials, and literary accolades, ensuring his vibrant voice remains central to Brazilian arts.
