Biography

Luis Vagner Dutra Lopes, better known as Luis Vagner Guitarreiro, was born in Bagé, Rio Grande do Sul, in 1948, the son and grandson of musicians. Descended from a family with a strong musical tradition, he established himself as one of the great names in Brazilian music, standing out especially as a pioneer and exponent of samba-rock and later incorporating reggae influences from the 1980s onwards.

His artistic career began to gain prominence in the 1960s, a period during which he joined important musical ensembles, such as the band Os Brasas. Throughout his career, he worked with and accompanied great icons of MPB and Brazilian soul, including Jorge Ben, Tim Maia, César Camargo Mariano, and the legendary gaucho composer Lupicínio Rodrigues.

In addition to his intense work as an instrumentalist on albums by other fundamental artists, such as Tom Zé and Jorge Ben Jor, Luis Vagner built a consistent solo discography. Albums like Simples, Fusão das Raças, and the recent Samba, Rock, Reggae, Ritmos em Blues e Outras Milongas Mais immortalized his versatile style and his unique contribution to national culture until his passing in 2021.
