Biography

Luiz Gonzaga Kedi Ayrão, known artistically as Luiz Ayrão, was born in Rio de Janeiro on January 19, 1942. Son of the musician and composer Darcy Ayrão, he grew up in a privileged artistic environment, having early contact with great names in Brazilian music such as Pixinguinha and João da Baiana. A law graduate, he even worked as a lawyer and public prosecutor before dedicating himself entirely to his musical and artistic career, standing out as one of the great composers and interpreters of samba and MPB.

His trajectory as a composer began to gain projection in the 1960s, when he had songs recorded by Roberto Carlos, the starting point of a phase linked to Jovem Guarda. In the following decade, he established himself as a singer of great popular success with striking tracks like "Porta Aberta" and "Os Amantes", the latter selling millions of copies. Throughout a career spanning more than five decades, Ayrão has released dozens of albums, earned multiple gold and platinum records, and also ventured into literature as an author of novels and memoirs.

In addition to his recorded work, Luiz Ayrão played an important cultural role as a nightclub entrepreneur in São Paulo, hosting various icons of national music such as Elis Regina, Martinho da Vila, and Clara Nunes. His deep connection with Portela yielded memorable sambas and striking tributes to the Rio de Janeiro samba school. With a vast discography and hundreds of recorded compositions, he remains a central and respected figure in the history of Brazilian popular music.
