Biography

Luiz Carlos da Vila, artistic name of Luiz Carlos Baptista, was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1949 and stood out as one of the country's great composers and samba artists. Growing up in the Rio de Janeiro neighborhoods of Ramos and Vila da Penha, he had his first contact with music through the accordion and the acoustic guitar, although he had to interrupt his musical studies in his youth due to his family's financial difficulties. His career gained strong momentum in the 1970s, when he joined the composer wing of the Vila Isabel samba school, adopting the name of the organization as part of his artistic identity.

A frequent attendee of the famous pagode circle of the Cacique de Ramos block, Luiz Carlos da Vila established himself as one of the pillars of contemporary Rio de Janeiro samba. He was part of a striking generation alongside names such as Jorge Aragão, Arlindo Cruz, Zeca Pagodinho, Almir Guineto, Sereno do Cacique, and Sombrinha. With the latter and with Arlindo Cruz, he co-authored fundamental works in the discography of the group Fundo de Quintal, including classics such as "O Show Tem Que Continuar" and "Doce Refúgio". In addition, his genius was present in the iconic samba-plot "Kizomba, a Festa da Raça", which gave Vila Isabel the victory in the 1988 Carnival.

His dedication to suburban culture was also manifested in the creation of the group and block Suburbanistas in 2003, alongside Dorina and Mauro Diniz, celebrating the composers of the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro. Throughout his career, he released striking albums, revering historical names such as Candeia and consolidating a respected discography. Luiz Carlos da Vila passed away in 2008, at the age of 59, due to complications from bowel cancer, leaving an indelible legacy for the history of Brazilian music.
