Biography

Luiz Chagas was a Brazilian guitarist, composer, journalist, and translator, born in Goiânia, Goiás, in 1952. He became a significant figure in the São Paulo independent music scene, particularly associated with the "Vanguarda Paulista" movement of the 1980s. Chagas was a member of the band Isca de Polícia, led by the influential Itamar Assumpção, and his guitar work was a distinctive element in Assumpção's albums.

Beyond his musical contributions, Chagas also had a notable career in journalism, writing for publications such as O Estado de S.Paulo, A Tarde, and Revista piauí. His journalistic work often displayed the irony and sharp wit that characterized his personality. He also composed soundtracks for films in the 1980s, including "Filme Demência" (1986), "Anjos de arrabalde" (1987), and "Quincas Borba" (1987).

In his later years, Luiz Chagas gained recognition among younger audiences as the father of musicians Tulipa Ruiz and Gustavo Ruiz. He collaborated with Tulipa on several songs, including "Sushi" and "Às Vezes." His first solo album, "Música de apartamento," was completed shortly before his passing on July 9, 2024, and is set to be released posthumously, serving as a testament to his enduring musical legacy. He is remembered as a versatile artist who seamlessly blended his talents as a musician and writer.
