Biography

Luiz de Carvalho was a pioneering Brazilian singer and evangelist, widely recognized as one of the founding figures of contemporary Christian music in the country. Born in Bauru, he left home at a young age to pursue a career in music, eventually leading a touring ensemble known as the Conjunto Havaiano that performed internationally in countries like Argentina, Chile, and Mexico. Following his conversion to Protestantism in the late 1940s, he shifted his immense musical talents entirely toward sacred music, studying at the Conservatório Carlos Gomes and recording groundbreaking works for the Christian community.

Throughout a career spanning decades, Luiz made history by releasing the very first 33 RPM LP in Brazilian sacred music, titled Musical Boas Novas, in 1955. He also became renowned for introducing the acoustic guitar into church worship services during a time when it was uncommon, and he famously performed before massive crowds at the Maracanã stadium. His prolific output included numerous celebrated albums, such as the gold-certified Meu Tributo - A Deus Toda a Glória, alongside collaborations with artists like Feliciano Amaral and Edvaldo Holanda.

In addition to his performance career, Luiz founded the Boas Novas record label, contributing significantly to the distribution and growth of gospel music in Brazil. He remained active well into his later years, receiving honors such as the Troféu Promessas and continuing to record and perform until his passing in 2015. His enduring legacy as a messenger of faith cemented his status as a monumental pillar of Brazilian gospel history.
