Biography
Luiz Henrique was a prominent Brazilian singer, acoustic guitarist, and composer known for his contributions to bossa nova and MPB. Born in Tubarão, he spent his youth and career developing a distinct musical style that eventually took him from the vibrant nightlife of Rio de Janeiro to international stages. Throughout his career, he shared the stage and collaborated with legendary figures of Brazilian music, including Elis Regina and Jorge Ben.
During the height of the bossa nova movement in the 1960s, Luiz Henrique relocated to the United States, where he lived and performed until the early 1970s. While residing in New York, he interacted extensively with American jazz greats as well as fellow Brazilian expatriates such as João Gilberto and Hermeto Pascoal. His time abroad solidified his reputation as a versatile artist who successfully bridged Brazilian rhythms with North American jazz sensibilities.
After returning to Brazil, he continued to compose and perform until his untimely death in a car accident in 1985. His enduring legacy in Brazilian popular music was later celebrated through tribute albums featuring prominent artists like Ivan Lins and Elza Soares. His compositions continue to be recognized as an important part of the bossa nova canon.
