Biography
Luiz Roberto Borges, born in São Paulo, stood out in the Brazilian classical music scene as a maestro, conductor, and artistic director. At age 22, he became the youngest conductor of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, initiating a trajectory of great relevance in the country's choral and symphonic music. Throughout his career, he led important ensembles, such as the Madrigal das Arcadas and the Sociedade Pró-Música Sacra, founded by him in 1970 to disseminate the national and foreign sacred repertoire.
His intense conducting activity included collaborations with renowned orchestras, such as the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra and the São Paulo Philharmonic, in addition to striking premieres of symphonic-choral works in Brazil. He worked alongside important figures of Brazilian music, such as maestro Roberto Schnorrenberg and composer Amaral Vieira, consolidating himself as one of the great references in the field of choral singing and the diffusion of classical sacred music.
In addition to his expressive artistic contribution, which earned him the APCA Award in 1991 at the helm of his choir, Luiz Roberto Borges also practiced law specialized in industrial property and stood out in national chess. He passed away in December 1993, leaving a lasting legacy in São Paulo and Brazilian culture, being posthumously honored with the name of a street in the capital of São Paulo and with the Luiz Roberto Borges Memorial Tournament.
