His artistic journey began in Rio de Janeiro, where he performed romantic music, waltzes, and samba-canções before shifting towards northeastern rhythms like baião. He achieved major chart success with beloved compositions such as "Menino de Braçanã" and "Prelúdio Pra Ninar Gente Grande," also known as "Menino Passarinho." His prolific catalog was recorded by many iconic Brazilian interpreters, including Caetano Veloso, Nara Leão, Maria Bethânia, and Rita Lee.
