Biography

Lula Côrtes was a pioneering Brazilian singer, songwriter, painter, and poet born in Recife. He played a crucial role in the development of Brazilian psychedelic rock by being one of the first artists to fuse traditional northeastern regional rhythms with rock and roll. Alongside musicians like Zé Ramalho, he helped forge a unique sonic identity that blended local folklore with countercultural aesthetics.

Throughout his career, Côrtes was involved in several landmark independent recordings. In 1973, he teamed up with Lailson to release Satwa, widely regarded as the first independent album in modern Brazilian music, which featured contributions from renowned guitarists like Robertinho de Recife. A few years later, in 1975, he collaborated with Zé Ramalho on the legendary and ultra-rare double album Paêbirú. Although most original copies were tragically destroyed in a flood, the album attained mythical status among collectors worldwide. He also performed with Alceu Valença's band in the mid-1970s and collaborated with numerous other artists on landmark records.

In addition to his musical endeavors, Côrtes was an accomplished visual artist and published several books of poetry. Despite facing long delays in releasing much of his solo material—such as his 1970s recordings which only saw daylight decades later—his influence on Brazilian alternative music endured. He continued to create music into the 2000s, working with groups like Má Companhia, before passing away in his hometown of Recife in 2011.
