Biography

Lupercais was a Brazilian gothic rock band formed in Gama, Distrito Federal, in 1995. The band emerged as a counterpoint to the more lighthearted and humorous rock prevalent in the Brasília scene at the time, offering a deep and somber alternative. Inspired by international acts like Echo & the Bunnymen, Bauhaus, and Joy Division, as well as Brazilian bands such as Muzak, Finis Africae, and Zero, Lupercais blended post-punk and gothic rock with dense, poetic lyrics. Their music explored themes of pessimism, anguish, and depression, often referencing literary and historical figures.

The band's lyrical content was a significant aspect of their identity, with songs like "O Testamento de Caim," "Crônica de um Morto Cafajeste," and "O Suplício de Bruno" showcasing their melancholic and intellectual depth. Despite a short but impactful career, Lupercais released several demos, including their self-titled debut in 1995 and "O Desregramento dos Sentidos" in 1997. They also contributed to notable underground compilations such as "Atitude – Vol II" and "Violet Carson."

The trajectory of Lupercais was tragically cut short in 1998 with the death of their vocalist and frontman, Sidney Paulino, at the age of 28 due to a brain aneurysm. His passing marked the end of the band, but not their legacy. Posthumous releases, like the EP "Os Filhos da Descrença," and tribute albums have helped to keep their music and influence alive within the Brazilian gothic and alternative rock scene.
