Machado de Assis is widely recognized as the most prominent figure in Brazilian literature, celebrated globally for his profound contributions to novels, short stories, poetry, and literary criticism. Born in Rio de Janeiro, he rose from humble beginnings to become a central intellectual force, co-founding and serving as the first president of the Academia Brasileira de Letras.
