Biography

Mamelo Sound System was a trio formed in São Paulo in late 1998, composed of producer and multi-instrumentalist Alexandre Basa, and vocalists Rodrigo Brandão (also known as Rodrigo Audiolandro) and Lurdez da Luz. The group stood out in the São Paulo cultural scene for its original sound and engaging performances, blending various branches of black music.

Mamelo Sound System's compositions were characterized by the fusion of hip hop rhymes and beats with influences from Jamaican dub and jazz-inspired melodies. This mix resulted in a pulsing and danceable sound, with well-crafted lyrics, which was considered rare in the Brazilian musical scene of the time. The name "Sound System" is a direct allusion to the crews that animated dances in Jamaica, a fundamental basis in the group's musical formation.

Throughout its trajectory, Mamelo Sound System collaborated with several heavyweight artists of Brazilian music, such as members of Nação Zumbi, Mundo Livre S/A, Paula Lima, DJ Marky, Thaíde & DJ Hum, and Rappin' Hood. The group also gained international recognition, with the participation of figures like Afrika Bambaataa and Rahzel. The trio ended its activities in 2010, but its members continued in individual projects and collaborations.
