Biography

Mamonas Assassinas was a Brazilian comedic rock band formed in Guarulhos, São Paulo. Originally established in 1989 under the name Utopia by brothers Sérgio Reoli and Samuel Reoli alongside guitarist Bento Hinoto, the group transitioned into their iconic comedic style and adopted their final name in 1995 with the addition of vocalist Dinho and keyboardist Júlio Rasec. Their unique musical blend fused pop rock with popular genres like sertanejo, heavy metal, pagode romântico, vira, and forró, accompanied by wildly eccentric live performances.

During their brief career, the band released only one studio album in 1995, which became a phenomenal commercial success selling over three million copies in Brazil and earning a diamond certification. Hits such as "Vira-Vira" and "Pelados em Santos" dominated the airwaves, establishing them as pioneers of comedic rock in the national music scene. Their meteoric rise was tragically cut short in March 1996 when a plane crash claimed the lives of all band members and crew while returning to Guarulhos.

Despite their short-lived existence of less than a year, Mamonas Assassinas left an enduring legacy that continues to influence Brazilian music decades later. Their groundbreaking debut remains one of the best-selling albums in the country's history, inspiring tributes from prominent acts like Titãs and Só Pra Contrariar. Their vibrant humor and eclectic sound captured the hearts of audiences across all generations, cementing their status as cultural icons in Brazil.
