Biography
Manitu is a Brazilian band formed in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, in late 2001. The name "Manitu" itself is derived from the indigenous Algonquin language, meaning a magical force inherent in people, things, and phenomena, reflecting the band's essence and the connection they aim to establish with their audience. Their music is primarily rooted in reggae, but they skillfully blend it with elements of rock, pop, xote, and reggaeton, creating a unique and danceable sound that has captivated a large and loyal following across Brazil.
Over the years, Manitu has performed at major national festivals, including the Festival de Verão de Salvador and Pop Rock Brasil. They have also shared stages with international artists, notably being invited by Bernard Sumner to participate in a New Order concert, performing "Bizarre Love Triangle." Their music is characterized by simple harmonies and relatable lyrics that often capture the everyday aspects of life, leading many fans to describe their songs as the "soundtrack to their lives."
In 2017, Manitu celebrated 15 years of career by releasing their seventh album, "Garota," a compilation that included remastered hits and new tracks. The band has also engaged in community-focused initiatives, such as performing in schools in Belo Horizonte as part of their "volta às aulas" tour. Manitu's consistent presence in the Brazilian music scene, marked by numerous shows and a dedicated fanbase, solidifies their position as a significant act in the country's reggae and pop landscape.
