Biography

Emmanuel Gama de Sousa Almeida, better known as Manuca Almeida, was a prolific Brazilian composer, poet, actor, and music producer born in Aracaju in 1963. Over his lifetime, he penned more than 600 songs, with over 250 of them officially recorded by various artists. His deep connection to the cultural landscape of northeastern Brazil left a lasting mark on both the musical and literary traditions of the region.

Among his greatest musical achievements is the immensely successful song "Esperando na Janela", co-written with Targino Gondim and Raimundinho do Acordeom. The track gained international acclaim after being recorded by Gilberto Gil and featured in the soundtrack of the acclaimed film Eu, Tu, Eles, ultimately winning a Latin Grammy Award. Throughout his career, Almeida collaborated with notable Brazilian artists such as Arnaldo Antunes and Alexandre Leão, establishing his work across popular music, television, and cinema.

In addition to his prolific songwriting, Almeida was an accomplished author who published numerous books of poetry and children's literature, including projects like Meu Nome é Poesia and Além do Amor. His legacy continues to be celebrated through cultural landmarks, such as the Teatro Manuca Almeida and the municipal day established in his honor in Juazeiro. He passed away in Barretos in 2017, leaving behind a rich artistic heritage.
