Biography

Armando de Souza Marçal, widely known as Marçalzinho, is a prominent Brazilian percussionist born in Rio de Janeiro. Immersed in music from a young age, he began his artistic journey at fourteen, following a rich family lineage as the son of the legendary samba percussion director Mestre Marçal and grandson of Armando Marçal. His deep roots in traditional Brazilian rhythms laid a strong foundation for a prolific career that bridges samba, MPB, and jazz.

Throughout his extensive career, Marçalzinho has collaborated with a vast array of legendary Brazilian artists, including Gal Costa, Jorge Benjor, Caetano Veloso, and Elis Regina. His versatile percussion work has enriched iconic recordings and performances across the Brazilian popular music landscape, contributing to projects with João Bosco, Djavan, Chico Buarque, and Ivan Lins. In addition to these collaborations, he introduced dynamic percussion elements to the sound of Os Paralamas do Sucesso and performed as a member of Lulu Santos's band.

Beyond Brazil, Marçalzinho has left a significant mark on the international music scene, working closely with renowned acts such as the Pat Metheny Group and Paul Simon. His distinct rhythmic touch has crossed cultural boundaries, elevating projects with international icons while cementing his reputation as one of Brazil's most sought-after percussionists. He also released his debut solo album, Lado a Lado, in 2007, showcasing his multifaceted artistry.
