Biography
Marcelo de Souza Camelo is a prominent Brazilian singer, songwriter, and musician born in Rio de Janeiro. He first gained widespread recognition as the lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter of the influential alternative rock band Los Hermanos, which he formed alongside Rodrigo Barba while studying journalism at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. With Los Hermanos, Camelo achieved massive commercial and critical success, penning iconic tracks such as 'Anna Júlia' and helping steer the band's musical evolution into a sophisticated blend of rock, samba, and bossa nova.
Following the band's hiatus in 2007, Camelo embarked on a celebrated solo career, releasing his debut solo album 'Sou' in 2008, which featured collaborations with artists like Mallu Magalhães, Dominguinhos, and the instrumental group Hurtmold. His subsequent solo releases, including 'Toque Dela' and various live projects, further cemented his reputation as one of the most sophisticated and introspective artists in contemporary Brazilian popular music. Over the years, his work has consistently earned critical acclaim, positioning him as a vital figure in the modern Brazilian independent music scene.
Throughout his career, Camelo has collaborated with and influenced numerous notable figures in Brazilian music, maintaining a deeply artistic approach to his compositions and performances. His partnership and life with singer-songwriter Mallu Magalhães brought him further into the public eye, and the couple eventually relocated to Lisbon, Portugal. Despite occasional controversies with the mainstream media, Camelo remains highly respected for his uncompromising artistic integrity and his lasting contributions to Brazilian rock and MPB.
