Born Marcelo Maldonado Peixoto in Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo D2 is a pivotal figure in the evolution of Brazilian hip hop. He first gained national notoriety as the frontman for Planet Hemp, a band known for its aggressive blend of rock and rap and its outspoken advocacy for the decriminalization of marijuana and freedom of expression. Following the group's massive success and various legal controversies in the 1990s, D2 transitioned into a highly influential solo career that redefined the boundaries of urban music in Brazil.

Marcelo D2 is best known for his innovative fusion of traditional samba with contemporary hip hop, a sound he explored extensively in landmark albums like 'Eu Tiro É Onda' and 'À Procura da Batida Perfeita'. His work often pays homage to the roots of Brazilian music, drawing significant inspiration from samba icons such as Bezerra da Silva and João Nogueira.
