Biography

Marcia Taborda is a renowned Brazilian classical guitarist, singer, researcher, and university professor born in Rio de Janeiro. Throughout her distinguished career, she has combined rigorous academic research with high-level performance, establishing herself as a leading authority on the history of the Brazilian guitar and the tradition of female singer-guitarists. Her educational background includes studies with prominent figures such as Turíbio Santos, under whose guidance she earned her degrees and master's degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), eventually completing her doctorate in Social History.

As a performer, Taborda has taken the rich tapestry of Brazilian music, ranging from traditional choro to contemporary pieces, to prestigious international stages such as Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. She has collaborated with notable artists like Jards Macalé, Tato Taborda, and Nelson Freire, while also participating in important cultural broadcasts such as Rolando Boldrin's Sr. Brasil on TV Cultura. Her discography features acclaimed works such as Choros de Paulinho da Viola and Viola & Violão em terras de São Sebastião, which highlight her dedication to the nation's musical heritage.

Beyond her performance career, she has made lasting contributions as a writer and academic, publishing significant works including Violão e identidade nacional and O violão na corte imperial. As a coordinator of the Guitar Study Center (NEV) at the UFRJ School of Music, she continues to shape new generations of musicians and scholars. Her multifaceted contributions bridge the gap between historical preservation and active musical interpretation, cementing her legacy in Brazilian instrumental music alongside contemporaries like Fabio Zanon.
