Biography

Rodrigo Cerqueira de Souza Machado Vieira, known artistically as MC Marechal, was born in Niterói on September 22, 1981. He began his journey in hip hop in 1998 in the freestyle circles of Zoeira Hip Hop, quickly standing out in MC battles before joining the influential and now-defunct group Quinto Andar in 1999, alongside names like De Leve and Shawlin. Afterward, he pursued a solo career and collaborated with artists of great national prominence, achieving distinction with guest appearances such as on the song "Loadeando", alongside Marcelo D2 and Fernandinho Beatbox.

In addition to his work as a rapper, songwriter, and music producer, Marechal became a central figure in the dissemination of hip hop culture and social awareness in Brazil. He is the creator of Batalha do Conhecimento, held at the Rio Art Museum (MAR), which proposes replacing personal insults with debates on education, politics, and culture. He also created, in partnership with Janaína Michalski, the Livrar project, an initiative focused on the distribution and exchange of books by independent authors during his shows, uniting the power of literature with the representativeness of rap.

Recognized for his "Um Só Caminho" (One Single Path) ideology, based on loyalty, respect, and artistic independence in the face of record industry impositions, Marechal influenced several exponents of national rap, such as Emicida and Rashid. Although he is frequently remembered for the long production process of his solo album, the artist solidified his name through striking singles like "Espírito Independente" and "Sangue Bom". His work and activism remain fundamental pillars for the valorization of critical thinking within Brazilian urban music.
