Biography

Margareth Menezes is a prominent Brazilian singer, songwriter, actress, and political figure, widely regarded as a pioneer of the Samba-Reggae and Afropop movements. Born in Salvador, Bahia, in 1962, she began her artistic journey in the local church choir and later transitioned into theater in the early 1980s. Her theatrical background, including collaborations with Silas Henrique and winning the Troféu Caymmi for 'Best Performer' in 1985, provided a strong foundation for her explosive musical career.

Her musical breakthrough occurred in 1987 with the recording of 'Faraó (Divindade do Egito)' alongside Djalma de Oliveira, which became a massive hit and the first samba-reggae recorded in Brazil. This success propelled her to international fame; her album 'Elegibô' topped the Billboard World Albums chart in 1990, leading to a world tour as the opening act for David Byrne of the Talking Heads. Throughout her career, she has been compared to Aretha Franklin by the Los Angeles Times for her powerful, soulful voice and commanding stage presence.

Menezes has collaborated with legendary Brazilian icons such as Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and Carlinhos Brown. She is the founder of the 'Afropop Brasileiro' movement, which seeks to preserve and promote Afro-Brazilian culture through a fusion of traditional rhythms and global sounds like rock and funk. Beyond her music, she is deeply involved in social work through her NGO, Fábrica Cultural, which provides artistic and professional training for youth in Salvador.

In January 2023, Margareth Menezes took on a significant political role as Brazil's Minister of Culture in the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Her appointment reflects her lifelong commitment to the defense of Brazilian cultural heritage and the visibility of Afro-Brazilian art on both national and global stages.
