Biography

Marina Iris Gonçalves de Lima, born in Rio de Janeiro in 1984, is a singer and songwriter who has established herself as one of the prominent voices of contemporary Brazilian samba. Raised in the suburbs of Rio, her relationship with music, especially samba, was shaped early on by her family environment, with her father being a guitar player and composer. This immersion led her to pursue a professional career in music after studying Literature at UERJ, where she also developed important musical partnerships, such as the one with Manu da Cuíca.

Her discography includes albums such as "Marina Íris" (2014), "Rueira" (2018), "Voz Bandeira" (2019), and "Virada" (2023). "Voz Bandeira", in particular, is a work with a strong social and political nature, dedicated to the memory of councilwoman Marielle Franco, addressing themes such as the struggle of women, ancestry, and the fight against prejudice. Marina also conceived the project "É Preta", a collective of Black female singers that seeks to give prominence to these artists, highlighting the importance of representation in Brazilian music.

Throughout her career, Marina Iris has been recognized for her versatility and for uniting the tradition of samba with contemporary approaches. She has collaborated with several renowned artists, such as Zélia Duncan, Péricles, Leci Brandão, and Elza Soares, and received the Alcione Award for Best Female Singer in 2022. Her most recent work, "Banzo Batucada – Marina Iris Canta Wilson Moreira" (2026), is a tribute to the iconic sambista Wilson Moreira, demonstrating her deep respect and knowledge of the genre and its masters.
