Biography

Marquim D'Morais is a multifaceted multi-artist, born and raised in Aglomerado da Serra, in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. His artistic journey is marked by a strong connection to popular culture and his identity as a "favelado," which he proudly displays. His work moves across various musical genres, such as rap, reggae, funk, samba, and MPB, always with a critical and sensitive perspective on social reality.

His musical career began in 1999, influenced by the musicality of capoeira, a cultural manifestation that introduced him to instruments, chants, and songwriting. Over more than 25 years of artistic journey, Marquim has accumulated a repertoire of over 500 songs, ranging from capoeira chants to ballads, as well as samba, reggae, rap, and funk. He stands out not only as a composer and performer, but also as a capoeira master, cultural producer, and art-educator.

Marquim D'Morais is known for his collaborations with artists from the Belo Horizonte scene, such as Iaiá Drumond, who is his most frequent songwriting partner. His work is recognized for its authenticity and ability to portray daily life in the peripheries with poetry and realism, without ignoring the beauty that exists within the chaos. Through his art, he seeks to promote reflection and resistance, affirming the periphery as a space of cultural and artistic production.
