Biography

Marcos de Souza Nunes, widely known as Marquinho PQD, was a prominent Brazilian singer and composer, deeply rooted in the samba and pagode genres. Born in Realengo, a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro's West Zone, PQD's musical journey began in 1983 when the group Fundo de Quintal recorded his song "Fases do Amor." His talent quickly gained recognition, notably when Beth Carvalho re-recorded his composition "Coração Feliz" in 1984, a partnership with Adilson Bispo and Gerson do Vale.

Throughout his career, Marquinho PQD penned over 400 songs, many of which became anthems within the Brazilian music scene. He was particularly known for his prolific collaborations, most notably with Arlindo Cruz, with whom he co-authored around 100 songs. His compositions were brought to life by a constellation of samba legends, including Zeca Pagodinho, Alcione, Jorge Aragão, Jovelina Pérola Negra, and many others. Beyond his contributions to samba circles, PQD also made his mark on the Rio Carnival, composing sambas-enredo for the Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel samba school.

Despite his significant impact on Brazilian popular music, Marquinho PQD often worked outside the mainstream spotlight, a reality that reflects how many artists from peripheral communities contribute to the nation's cultural identity without receiving commensurate recognition. He passed away on October 29, 2023, at the age of 66, leaving behind an indelible legacy of samba, poetry, and friendship that continues to resonate within Brazil's rich musical tapestry.
