Biography

Maskavo Roots is a prominent Brazilian reggae band formed in Brasília in 1993, later relocating to São Paulo in 2000. Originally starting out as a collective inspired by Bob Marley covers, the group evolved into a major force in the Brazilian reggae and rock scene of the 1990s. Over their decades-long career, featuring various lineup shifts and a shortening of their name simply to Maskavo, they have released numerous albums and DVDs, touring extensively throughout Brazil and internationally.

Throughout their history, the band has collaborated and shared stages with notable figures in Brazilian popular music, including Jorge Ben Jor, Samuel Rosa of Skank, and Seu Jorge. Their distinct blend of Jamaican-influenced reggae with Brazilian sensibilities yielded enduring hits such as "Um Anjo do Céu" and "Tempestade". Their contributions to the genre have earned them recognition, including accolades from the Prêmio Dynamite.

The group's evolving lineup over the years has included founding members and subsequent additions who helped sustain their energetic live performances. From their early days emerging from the vibrant Brasília underground scene alongside contemporaries like Raimundos and O Rappa, Maskavo Roots remains a staple of Brazilian reggae history.
