Biography
Matão & Monteiro is a renowned Brazilian sertanejo duo that left its mark on the country's music scene. Originally formed by Marivaldo Santos Ferreira (Matão) and Abílio Ferreira Neto (Monteiro), the duo began their journey in Goiânia in the 1980s, under the patronage of the iconic Tião Carreiro. In 1981, they released their first album through the Rodeio label, which included the hit "Nuvem Passageira", a cover of Matogrosso & Mathias. The year 1983 brought their second record, featuring the standout track "Deusa do Araguaia", and in 1987, the album "História de Um Amor" earned the duo their first gold record with the song "Proposta", cementing them as one of the great names in sertanejo music.
The duo stood out for their vocal harmonies and songs that touched the public's heart, such as "Pago Dobrado" (also performed by Chitãozinho & Xororó), "Contradições", and "O Que Que a Gente Não Faz por Amor?". Throughout a career spanning more than 30 years, Matão & Monteiro released around 14 albums, including LPs, CDs, and DVDs, and collaborated with various artists of the genre, such as Gino & Geno. The original partnership was interrupted in 2016 with the passing of Marivaldo Santos Ferreira, known as Matão, who died from prostate cancer.
Following the loss of Matão, the duo gained a new lineup in 2020, with Dhonatan Coelho taking on the pseudonym Matão, carrying on the musical story begun by Marivaldo. This new phase celebrated the duo's more than 40 years on the road with a commemorative DVD and special guest appearances. Matão & Monteiro are considered an inspiration for many sertanejo artists, such as Leandro & Leonardo and Zezé Di Camargo & Luciano, and continue to be a reference for lovers of traditional sertanejo music.
