Biography

Maurício Pereira, also known as Pereirinha, is a prominent singer-songwriter, saxophonist, and actor who has established himself as an icon of independent Brazilian music. Born in São Paulo in 1959, he first gained widespread recognition in the mid-1980s when he co-founded the influential alternative duo Os Mulheres Negras alongside André Abujamra. Throughout his career, Pereira has maintained a prolific output, releasing numerous acclaimed solo albums such as Na Tradição, Mergulhar na Surpresa, and Outono no Sudeste, while constantly blending experimental pop, rock, and MPB elements.

Beyond his work with Os Mulheres Negras and his extensive solo discography, Pereira is deeply embedded in the Brazilian cultural landscape. In the early 1990s, he performed hundreds of classic Brazilian songs on the television program Fanzine, and he later collaborated with various ensembles, including the project Três é Bom alongside Wandi Doratiotto and Paulo Freire. His creative lineage also continues through his sons, Tim Bernardes of O Terno and Chico Bernardes, both of whom have carved out successful careers in contemporary Brazilian music.

Pereira's contributions to Brazilian independent culture extend well beyond music, encompassing work as a journalist, voice actor, and educator giving workshops on popular song production. His hallmark song "Trovoa" has been famously interpreted by artists like Maria Gadú and Metá Metá, cementing his legacy as a vital songwriter. Operating largely through independent channels, his work remains a cornerstone of artistic innovation in São Paulo's vibrant music scene.
