Biography

Maurício Reis, born João Maurício da Costa in Santa Rita, was a prominent Brazilian singer known for his contributions to the brega musical style. Throughout a dedicated career spanning 29 years, he recorded 27 albums, including both LPs and CDs, which cemented his place in popular romantic music culture. His work often crossed paths with notable MPB figures, such as when his 1973 LP Fim de Noivado featured production by Hyldon, the renowned artist behind hits like Na rua, na chuva, na fazenda.

Tragically, his life and career were cut short on July 22, 2000, when he died in a car accident in Bonito, Pernambuco, caused by severe weather conditions that flooded the highway. The accident carried a haunting parallel to his own discography, as his 1973 album had featured the song Lenço Manchado, a track that narrates a car crash. Despite the tragedy, his musical legacy endures among fans of classic romantic and brega repertoire in Brazil, remembered alongside contemporaries of the era such as Waldick Soriano and Nelson Ned.
