Biography

Mauro Duarte de Oliveira was born in Matias Barbosa, Minas Gerais, moving to Rio de Janeiro in his childhood. He had deep contact with samba starting in his adolescence, joining street blocks and samba schools such as São Clemente and Estrela de Botafogo, in addition to standing out as a percussionist by adopting the tambourine as his favorite instrument. Throughout his career, he participated in important musical ensembles of the Rio scene, such as Os Autênticos and Os Cinco Crioulos, rubbing shoulders with great names in our music.

As a composer, he achieved great national projection starting in the 1970s, having his works recorded by renowned interpreters. Among his most prominent partnerships, he established a solid partnership with Paulo Cesar Pinheiro, resulting in unforgettable classics of MPB and samba such as "Menino Deus", "Canto das Três Raças" and "Portela na Avenida", immortalized in the voice of Clara Nunes. He also composed alongside pillars such as Walter Alfaiate, Paulinho da Viola, Noca da Portela and Elton Medeiros, consolidating a repertoire marked by poetic richness and fidelity to the genre's roots.

In his discography as an interpreter, the album released in 1985 in partnership with singer Cristina Buarque stands out. Mauro Duarte passed away in Rio de Janeiro in 1989, leaving an indelible legacy for samba and Brazilian culture, being revered for his contribution to samba-enredo and the tradition of Rio composers.
