Biography

Amácio Mazzaropi was one of the greatest phenomena of popularity and box office in Brazilian culture and cinema, notable for creating and portraying the iconic hillbilly character known as "Jeca". Over the course of nearly three decades in his film career, the artist produced, wrote, directed, and starred in dozens of productions through his own company, PAM Filmes, establishing a direct, affectionate, and lasting relationship with the general public in the country's interior.

His artistic work organically integrated fundamental elements of traditional Brazilian music, incorporating folk songs, modas de viola, cururus, cateretês, and rural sambas into the soundtracks of his films. This strong bond with popular and sertanejo culture ensured the spread of traditional caipira music to the broad public through its screenings in cinemas, on the radio, and on television.

Although his work was initially underestimated by sectors of film criticism during the Cinema Novo period, it underwent profound academic and cultural reassessments in the following decades, and today it is fully recognized for its sociological relevance. Mazzaropi's legacy remains alive through the preservation of his memory institutionalized in Taubaté and the ongoing influence of his comic figure in the Brazilian popular imagination, alongside important exponents of national music and culture such as Monteiro Lobato.
