Biography

Mbé is a Brazilian artist whose work explores themes of Black existence and identity in Brazil. Hailing from Rocinha, Rio de Janeiro, the artist's moniker, Mbé, is an Yoruba word meaning "to be and to exist." This philosophy permeates his artistic output, which often incorporates elements of sound collage, spoken word, and experimental improvisation.

Mbé first gained recognition as a member of the rap group Justa Causa. His solo career began to take shape with the release of his debut album, "Rocinha," in 2021. Recorded entirely within his bedroom, the album features seven sonic collages that delve into the complexities of Black life in Brazil, utilizing samples from figures like Clementina de Jesus and excerpts from Antônio Abujamra's "Provocações." This intimate and raw approach to creation highlights Mbé's commitment to authentic self-expression.

Beyond his recorded work, Mbé has also made a mark on the São Paulo Biennial, presenting an experimental improvisation inspired by the Yoruba word "Ìfura" (inspiration). He has also performed at the "Novas Frequências" festival and opened for notable artists such as Juçara Marçal and Kiko Dinucci, further solidifying his presence in the experimental and avant-garde music scenes. His work continues to push boundaries, offering a unique perspective on Brazilian culture and the Black experience.
