Biography

MC Katia, artistic name of Katia Marques de Melo França, was a Brazilian singer and songwriter, considered one of the pioneers of Rio de Janeiro funk. Born in Rio de Janeiro, she emerged in the early 2000s with the hit "A tá vai me pegar", portraying the reality of women from favela communities in her lyrics. At the time, she worked as a general services assistant and was a single mother.

Alongside Alessandra da Silva, she formed the duo MC Nem and MC Katia, with which she released the singles "Duelo" and "Duelo 2", which became anthems at funk dances, with the rivalry between "A Fiel" (MC Katia) and "A Líder" (MC Nem) being a milestone of the era. In 2008, she suffered an accident that kept her away from the stage for three years, a period during which she dealt with depression. In 2020, her career gained new momentum with the viralization of her songs on social media and her participation in Ludmilla's music video "Rainha da Favela", alongside other iconic female funk artists.

MC Katia passed away on August 13, 2023, at the age of 47, due to complications following surgery to remove a uterine myoma, which progressed to thrombosis, pneumonia, and the need for the amputation of part of her leg. Her death caused deep commotion in the artistic community and left an important legacy for Brazilian funk.
