Biography

MC Primo, born Jadielson da Silva Almeida in São Vicente, was a pioneering Brazilian singer and songwriter who became a central figure in the development of funk paulista during the 2000s. Hailing from the Jóquei Clube neighborhood, he stood out in the musical scene of the Baixada Santista by moving away from purely sensual themes, choosing instead to focus on socially conscious lyrics, tales of survival, spirituality, and the daily struggles of favela residents. His distinct metric precision and leadership within local funk festivals cemented his reputation as one of the genre's defining voices in the state of São Paulo, leaving a legacy that influenced subsequent movements like funk ostentação.

His most culturally impactful track, "Diretoria" (initially known as "Disciplina"), achieved immense success in São Paulo before catching the attention of the Rio de Janeiro funk scene, where it was famously covered by MC Sapão. Another major milestone in his career was the release of the music video for "Espada no Dragão," directed by KondZilla, which became a defining visual document of the era. Alongside peers such as MC Felipe Boladão and MC Duda do Marapé, Primo helped shape the aesthetics of proibidão and conscious funk in the region.

Tragically, MC Primo's life was cut short when he was shot and killed in São Vicente in April 2012 at the age of 28, amid a grim wave of executions targeting conscious and proibidão funk artists in the Baixada Santista. His untimely death sparked widespread public outrage, protests, and journalistic investigations into the criminalization of peripheral art. In May 2024, his enduring cultural impact was formally honored when the São Vicente City Council named a public square in his home neighborhood "Praça MC Primo," cementing his historical importance to Brazilian funk.
