Biography

Jefferson Fernandes Luiz, widely known as MC Sapão, was a prominent Brazilian singer and songwriter who rose to fame in the mid-2000s. Born in the Alemão favela complex in Rio de Janeiro, his nickname "Sapão" (big frog) stemmed from his physical appearance in his youth. Before his music career, he held various jobs, including working in a tire shop, as a doorman, and as a delivery boy. His early life was marked by a brush with the law, as he was arrested in 1998 on drug trafficking charges, though later released due to insufficient evidence. During his time in prison, he penned his first song, "Eu Sei Cantar," a promise to his mother to use his talents for good.

Sapão officially launched his music career in 2005 with the song "Diretoria," which quickly gained popularity on Rio de Janeiro radio stations. The following year, he released his biggest hit, "Eu Tô Tranquilão," solidifying his place in the Brazilian funk scene. He became a regular feature on compilations produced by DJ Marlboro and embarked on national tours. Throughout his career, Sapão collaborated with various artists, including DJ Tom and the sertanejo duo João Neto & Frederico. His song "Classe A" was featured in the soundtrack of the popular soap opera "Malhação" in 2013. He was also known for performing at high-profile events, such as the wedding of actors Bruno Gagliasso and Giovanna Ewbank in 2010.

Throughout his life, MC Sapão battled health issues related to his obesity, which at one point reached 160 kg. He was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and underwent significant weight loss in 2013. Tragically, he was hospitalized in April 2019 with severe pneumonia and passed away on April 19, 2019, at the age of 40. His death was a significant loss to the Brazilian funk music community, and his legacy continues through his energetic performances and memorable hits.
