Biography
Meirelles e Os Copa 5 was an influential Brazilian samba-jazz ensemble, led by conductor, composer, arranger, saxophonist, and flutist J.T. Meirelles (João Theodoro Meirelles). The group stood out in the Brazilian music scene starting in the 1960s, especially at Beco das Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro, pioneering the fusion of samba and jazz.
The ensemble gained national prominence in 1963, when J.T. Meirelles, then 23 years old, was responsible for the arrangements on Jorge Ben's debut album, "Samba Esquema Novo", including the hit "Mas que Nada". This partnership with Jorge Ben solidified the language of samba-jazz, which would become the trademark of Meirelles e Os Copa 5.
Throughout their career, the group released acclaimed albums such as "O Som" (1964) and "O Novo Som" (1965), which are considered milestones of Brazilian instrumental jazz. The group's lineup varied over the years, but always under the leadership of J.T. Meirelles, featuring talented musicians such as Jessé Sadoc, Rafael Vernet, Rodrigo Villa, Rafael Barata, and Amoy Ribas at different stages.
After a period away from the stage and studios, J.T. Meirelles returned with the group in 2002 with the album "Samba Jazz!!" and, in 2005, released "Esquema Novo", which revisits his musical trajectory. The music of Meirelles e Os Copa 5 is recognized for its sophistication, groove, and versatility, influencing generations of Brazilian musicians.
