Biography

Mensageiros do Samba was a Brazilian samba group formed in the early 1960s, playing a pivotal role in the "Revitalization Movement of Root Samba." The group was founded by the renowned composer and singer Candeia, alongside other notable musicians like Picolino and Casquinha. Their music was deeply rooted in traditional samba, reflecting the authentic sounds and spirit of the genre.

The group's primary contribution to Brazilian music was their single LP, also titled "Mensageiros do Samba," released in the early 1960s by Philips Records. This album featured compositions by Candeia and Picolino, including standout tracks like "Se eu conseguir" and "Lenço branco." In 1964, Mensageiros do Samba began performing regularly at Zicartola, a significant cultural hub in Rio de Janeiro, at the invitation of its founders, Cartola and Dona Zica. This period solidified their presence within the samba community.

Around 1966, the group saw a change in its lineup when Picolino departed to form the Trio ABC da Portela with Noca da Portela and Colombo. Following this, Candeia embarked on a successful solo career, releasing his first album in 1970. Despite their relatively short active period as a group, Mensageiros do Samba left a lasting mark on the samba landscape, contributing to the preservation and promotion of traditional samba during a crucial period of its revitalization.
