Biography
As Mercenárias is a Brazilian punk rock and post-punk band formed in São Paulo in 1982. The band is a pioneer for its essentially female lineup and its lyrics of strong political and social protest, addressing themes such as state oppression, traditional institutions, and patriarchy. With influences from bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, and The Slits, As Mercenárias stood out in the 1980s independent scene with a raw and visceral sound.
The original lineup featured Sandra Coutinho (bass), Rosália Munhoz (vocals), and Ana Machado (guitar), with Edgard Scandurra initially on drums, later replaced by Lou. The group released iconic albums such as "Cadê as Armas?" (1986), considered a landmark of national punk/post-punk, and "Trashland" (1987). After ending their activities in 1988, the band returned to the stage in the 2000s, led by Sandra Coutinho, maintaining their provocative essence and influencing new generations of artists.
Currently, the band remains active with Sandra Coutinho (bass and vocals), Marianne Crestani (guitar), and Michelle Abu (drums), performing with vigor and revisiting their anthems that have spanned generations. As Mercenárias are recognized not only as a historical reference in Brazilian rock, but as a pulsating and necessary creative force for the current scene, with lyrics that question social structures with intelligence and irony.
