Biography

Mestre João Paulo, born João Manuel dos Santos on September 3, 1950, is a highly respected figure in Brazilian popular culture, particularly known as the "Papa do Maracatu" (Pope of Maracatu). He was born in Vicência, Pernambuco, but has resided in Nazaré da Mata, also in Pernambuco, since he was 23 years old. His deep connection with maracatu began in his childhood, accompanying his uncle, a renowned caboclo de lança named Zé Porfírio, to rehearsals and gatherings.

He officially began his career as a caboclo de lança in 1983 and soon after became a Contramestre and then Mestre of the Maracatu Leão Formoso in 1984. From 1985 to 1989, he achieved success in the Concurso de Agremiações Carnavalescas in Recife. In 1990, he founded his own maracatu group, Leão Misterioso, in Nazaré da Mata, which he continues to lead. Mestre João Paulo is recognized for his poetic contributions to maracatu, composing verses that reflect the vibrant spirit of this traditional art form. He was also a pioneer in recording the first CD of maracatu rural and making it available online, significantly expanding its reach.

Beyond his role as a master and performer, Mestre João Paulo is also a dedicated educator, offering workshops on maracatu crafts like the making of collars, hats, and banners. His home in Nazaré da Mata serves as a cultural hub, a place where fellow artists and enthusiasts gather for exchange and celebration. He has received numerous accolades and honors for his lifelong dedication to preserving and promoting the maracatu tradition, solidifying his status as a living patrimony of Pernambuco's cultural heritage. His influence extends to a new generation of maracatu masters, whom he has mentored and inspired.
