Biography
Miguel Gustavo Werneck de Sousa Martins was born in the city of Rio de Janeiro in 1922 and stood out on the Brazilian cultural scene as a composer, journalist, radio broadcaster, and poet. He began his professional career in the media in the 1940s, initially working as a record librarian and later writing scripts and programs for radio. His creative versatility allowed him to move easily between advertising, composing memorable jingles, and popular music, writing sambas, marchas, and sambas de breque.
Throughout his career, he worked in partnership with various exponents of national music, establishing notable collaborations with artists such as Moreira da Silva, with whom he created memorable sambas de breque, and Jorge Veiga. His skill in advertising and popular composition brought him great notoriety, making him responsible for jingles and marchas that defined an era. Among his most emblematic works is the famous song "Pra Frente Brasil", composed for the 1970 World Cup, which became a patriotic anthem and a symbol of the Brazilian national team, in addition to compositions recorded by prominent figures such as Chacrinha and Miriam Batucada.
Miguel Gustavo passed away prematurely in January 1972, the victim of a heart attack, at the age of 49, leaving an indelible legacy in the country's culture and musical history. The strength of his work remained alive through carnival marchas, sambas, and jingles that continue to be present in the collective memory of Brazilians, cementing his name alongside the great creators of our music.
