Biography

Hildmar Diniz, widely known as Monarco, was a legendary Brazilian singer and composer, as well as a revered bastion and honorary president of the Portela samba school. Born in Rio de Janeiro, he moved as a child to Oswaldo Cruz, the historical cradle of Portela, where he immersed himself in the local samba community and became a disciple of the iconic Paulo da Portela. Although he never won a carnival plot-samba competition for his beloved school, Monarco achieved legendary status through his mastery of "sambas de terreiro" and yard anthems, cementing his legacy as one of the true guardians of traditional Rio de Janeiro samba.

Throughout his prolific career, Monarco collaborated with and had his compositions recorded by some of the biggest names in Brazilian music, including Paulinho da Viola, Martinho da Vila, Beth Carvalho, and Zeca Pagodinho, who famously recorded hits penned by Monarco such as "Coração em Desalinho" and "Vai Vadiar". His work was crucial in preserving the roots of Afro-Brazilian musical heritage. In 1999, he participated in the acclaimed project produced by Marisa Monte featuring the Velha Guarda da Portela. Later, he was featured in the award-winning documentary Mistério do Samba and released celebrated albums like Passado de Glória - Monarco 80 anos, which won the Brazilian Music Award.

Monarco remained active in cultural preservation and community leadership until his passing in December 2021 at the age of 88 in Rio de Janeiro. His profound influence on samba culture led the city's municipal government to rename Parque Madureira in his honor. His son, Mauro Diniz, frequently worked alongside him as an artistic director and musical partner, ensuring that the Diniz family legacy remains deeply intertwined with the history of Brazilian popular music.
